The Career Advancement Center is a forum where attendees, guest and exhibitors participating in APCO 2015 will have the opportunity to engage in discussions with experts from both the private and public sector on topics which are critical to professional development.

As communications professionals, we need active listening skills for work inside the PSAP and for life outside of work. This presentation examines specific actions we take to engage with others. From being open to what people say to grasping what they mean. Listening skills are a key to success for new professional learning; clear understandings of ongoing work, and for collaboration on planning and projects.

Resume building “to include or not to include”, that is the question. This one hour workshop will provide ideas on what a job seeker should include or omit on their resume. The attendee will also be able to answer the following questions:

  1. Can I use the same resume when applying for multiple positions within a company?
  2. Are references really that important and should I include them?
  3. How many positions should I list?
  4. Do I really need a cover letter?
  5. Should I provide a resume when applying for an internal position?
